GB.QUEEN VICTORIA 1840 MULREADY FIRST DAY CORRESPONDENCE A unique exhibition group of five 1d black Mulready letter sheets each addressed to H M Aldridge, Under Sherriff / solicitor at Poole, Dorset with one of them having been written and posted on 6 May 1840. We see 1d black letter sheet (stereo A26) cancelled fine red Maltese Cross with light but readable 'MY 6 40' datestamp on reverse, the letter also dated '6 May 1840' and a very clear '6 May 1840' receiver annotation on the side panel; the other four Mulready's all with central red MC cancellations include 1840 8 Jly (stereo A57) from Wareham; 1840 28 Jun (stereo A35) with two strikes of a framed 'No. 5' sub-office handstamp in red on front and a red 'BLANDFORD / 28 JU 1840 / Py POST' on reverse; 1840 16 Aug from Bridport (stereo A219) with Bridport datestamp in red on front; finally a similar example from Bridport (stereo A67) dated 1840 13 Jly but with 2 central strikes of the red MC. Chiefly fine & presentable, the first day item is good-looking with a filing fold clear of the dates. A series of Mulready covers to the same address is highly unusual, for one of them to be a first day use is probably unique (5 items)
