CANADA - NEWFOUNDLAND 1919 RARE "MARTINSYDE" AERIAL ATLANTIC MAIL (19th April) 3c brown with manuscript "Aerial Atlantic Mail J.A.R." (Robinson, the Postmaster General), SG 142a, on a fine envelope front tied by St. John's machine cancel, endorsed at upper left "per aeroplane Raynor, Newfoundland to Britain, Kindness of Major Morgan and F.P. Raynham Esq.". Raynham and Morgan made their trial flight on 18th April, and attempted their first flight on 18th May but were unsuccessful. A second atempt on 17th July resulted in a crash after covering just 50 yards. Raynam sailed to England on 21st July, but did not seliver the mail to the G.P.O. until 2nd January 1920. Believed to be less than 30 such covers produced, a great airmail rarity with Peter Holcombe certificate.
